When You've Done the Work but Still Feel Stuck: Understanding the Deeper Journey of Trauma Healing

Thursday, November 5, 2026 @ 2:35 PM

Have you ever wondered why, even after years of therapy, self-reflection, and trying to move forward, you still feel stuck? Perhaps you understand your past, but anxiety, painful memories, shame, or patterns in relationships continue to affect your daily life.

Understanding trauma is an important part of healing, but sometimes understanding alone isn't enough.

Trauma can affect more than our thoughts. It can impact our nervous system, relationships, sense of safety, self-worth, and even our relationship with God. You may know that you are no longer in the situation that hurt you, yet still find yourself reacting as though the danger is present.

Why Does Trauma Continue to Affect Us?

Unresolved trauma can leave emotional and physical responses that continue long after an experience has ended. Childhood trauma, abusive relationships, domestic violence, sexual trauma, and spiritual abuse can all contribute to feelings of anxiety, fear, disconnection, and difficulty trusting yourself or others.

The good news is that healing is possible.

How Brainspotting and EMDR Can Help

Traditional talk therapy can be helpful, but some people benefit from additional approaches that address the deeper effects of trauma. Brainspotting and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are trauma-focused therapeutic approaches that can help individuals process distressing experiences.

As a Certified Brainspotting Therapist, I incorporate Brainspotting, EMDR, and other evidence-based approaches into my work with clients. Therapy is individualized, compassionate, and paced with attention to each person's needs and sense of safety.

Where Faith and Healing Meet

For those who desire Christian counseling, healing can also include exploring the spiritual wounds that sometimes accompany trauma. Painful experiences can leave us questioning our worth, our identity, and even where God was during our darkest moments.

I believe emotional healing and spiritual growth can work together. Christian faith and biblical principles can be incorporated into counseling according to each client's wishes, without judgment or pressure.

Finding Hope Beyond Survival

At Abiding Joy Counseling, I work with Christian adults who are ready to heal from trauma and rediscover the life they were created to live. My goal is to provide a safe, compassionate space where clients can process painful experiences, restore hope, rebuild self-trust, and move toward greater emotional freedom.

I provide virtual Christian trauma counseling to adults in New Jersey, New York, and Maryland, specializing in trauma recovery, PTSD, Brainspotting, EMDR, and faith-integrated therapy.

If you have done the work but still feel stuck, you are not alone. Your past is part of your story, but it does not have to determine your future.

There is hope beyond survival. There is healing beyond understanding. And there is room for joy again.
