Why I Became a Professional Christian Therapist

A note from Kimberly Dunkin the founder: 14 Peaks was created as a resource for individuals and clinicians in the area of trauma. I believe God created each of us fascinating beings with the capacity to heal, which sparked my interest in neurophysiology as a conduit to healing trauma. Being an adoptive parent and witnessing the impact of developmental trauma propelled me to learn how the body reacts to trauma and how it heals.

I am passionate about bringing together neuroscience research and applying it practically, helping clinicians access protocols for clients who suffer from PTSD, somatic issues, attachment issues, and particularly developmental trauma.

My husband of 30 years and I have one musically gifted college-aged son and enjoy being part of the adoption community. The first part of my life I spent as a teacher, soccer coach, and martial arts instructor. I was blessed to have sports as a major part of my life, playing college soccer and ending my competitive career as an extreme expedition adventure racer. I enjoy all things outdoors in my free time, including riding ATVs, paddle boarding, kayaking, and skiing.

I have a doctorate in Psychology and a master’s degree in Religious Education and Professional Counseling. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP), and an SE assistant, trained in EMDR, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Neuroaffective Touch, Body And Somatic Education (BASE), and DBT. My dissertation is titled A Neurophysiological Treatment Plan for Neurosequential Deficits Due to Developmental Trauma.

As well as providing therapy to client, I also enjoy teaching clinicians neurophysiological trauma therapy, and running retreats and workshops based on our proprietary model. The staff I hire are exceptional and I learn from them daily.

I find immense fulfillment in journeying alongside individuals as they navigate life's twists and turns. My path into counseling has been enriched by diverse experiences, including a decade as a social worker at Methodist Children's Home. Working in social services has deepened my understanding of human resilience and the importance of supportive environments in fostering growth and healing. This experience ignited my passion for family dynamics and strengthened my commitment to supporting families through life's challenges.

In addition to my counseling work, I am on full-time church staff, which further shapes my approach to therapy. My background in ministry and discipleship allows me to integrate faith into the counseling process when desired by the client, providing a space where spiritual exploration can coexist with therapeutic interventions.
