It is a privilege to assist others in exploring their relationship with God, noticing where God is at work in their lives and inviting a deeper relationship with and awareness of the divine. I am a certified spiritual director with several decades of experience in being a companion for a person on his or her spiritual journey.
Christians have practiced spiritual direction for centuries. People seek spiritual direction for a variety of reasons. As humans, we endure day to day wear and tear on our spirits. We need spaces of refuge and sanctuary for self care and growth. Some reasons for spiritual direction are to examine the purpose and meaning of life, to intentionally integrate one's spirituality into each day, to deepen one's prayer life, to discern a call to ministry and service, to share struggles within a spiritual context, and to grow in intimacy with self and God. The director helps the person look beneath the surface and bring out the innermost truth, the likeness of Christ. The focus of each session centers on the relationship of the person and God. The director listens deeply and asks questions to assist the person in his or her process of reflection and spiritual growth. Methods of increasing awareness that the director teaches or guides the person in include daily examination, prayer, lectio divina, intentional silence, Biblical imagery, and others.
People usually come once or twice a month for an hour. Periodic mutual evaluations give opportunities to look at the overall process and reflect on how one's needs are being met. Over the course of time a person may find that since coming to spiritual direction, they develop greater spiritual clarity, feel more centered, are more aware of their spiritual needs and experience a richer understanding of where they are on their spiritual journey and where they are going.
