About

My name is Sonya Stagnoli and I have been licensed since 1992. I have my license as a Professional Counselor and Marriage & Family Therapist in Virginia. I have worked in Community Mental Health as well as private practice since my licensure. I have run Mental Health Centers as well as coordinated large programs over several counties. I was also certified as a family mediator by the Supreme Court of Virginia and have mediated several custody and visitation cases.

I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. I am certified to work with children through the military and have experience working with military families and all the blessings and challenges those moves entail. I also have experience in working with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and later deafened individuals, children and families; Christian counseling; working with children; adults; families with stepchildren; folks with anxiety, depressive disorders; grief counseling; preparing for life changes; and career counseling. I am certified as a Stepfamily Counselor.

My educational background includes an undergraduate psychology degree with a minor in Speech and Language; and a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling from Gallaudet University, the popular university for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students and Hearing Graduate students. Although I am hearing, I am fluent in American Sign Language.

I am a wife, mother, and step mother. I have a broad experience base. I like helping people navigate through life’s challenges. I am happy to speak with you about what is happening in your life and help you gain a different perspective, as well as developing some solid solutions to the personal conflicts that may arise. People tell me I have a kind way about me, and they enjoy talking to me. Your thoughts and feelings are important and I strive to provide a safe place for you to be able to express yourself. I look forward to working with you in the future.

My Christian Faith and My Professional Practice

I believe that mankind is made in the image of God. Often when Christians have things happen in their lives that cause them pain and suffering, they often worry that they have angered God, or "fallen from grace". God's love for you is beyond all measure. Leaning into His arms, repenting, and allowing His forgiveness to wash over you is often the beginning of true healing in a Christian's life. Life is difficult. Remembering WHOSE you are, as a Christian, is an important step in receiving His blessings and walking with Him. I hope to help you remember and shed your anger, heal your wounds and walk in step with He who loves you.
