Helping Clients with Struggles of Shame and Guilt

Thursday, September 24, 2026 @ 8:55 AM

Shame and guilt are strong emotions as most of the clients struggle with as they seek counseling when life gets tough for them. We as Chirstian counselors can help them, process those emotions and assist them with understanding such that they are equipped with corrective and rational beliefs and reparative actions. In that weekly journey with us in counseling, they are listened well and encouraged in the sessions as safe therapeutic professional relationship is established for them, for their next steps and healthy beliefs and actions. Shame and guilt first showed up in the Garden of Eden, through Satan, as he questioned Eve of her image of God (Gen 1:26-27), leading her to disbelieve God’s blessing and provision for her in His Sovereign holy goodness (Gen 1:28-29) and disobey Him (Gen 3:6-7). Shame is core emotion, the devaluing of self from the image of God, by the client as they see themselves in all the brokenness of the world and struggles of life. Guilt is the internal emotion within the client’s heart and mind and behavioral action arising from, in rebellion and disobedience toward God and His commandments (Gen 3:8-19). Some of the therapy modalities that assist with high focus on alleviating shame are Person Centered Therapy, Adlerian Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); and that with guilt are Dialectical Behavior Therapy, CBT, EMDR, and Gestalt Theory. As Christian counselors we recognize that secular therapy modalities are incomplete without the integration from biblical principles that God has prescribed in His word, as we work with our clients in the sessions, helping them to address shame and guilt. Going back to the incident how shame and guilt entered our prefect world created by God, we can understand how God addressed shame and guilt. God moved toward Adam and Eve with compassion as they were struggling with shame and guilt (Gen 3:21) and provided them with a promise (Gen 3:15) that someday the curse from shame and guilt will be completely overcome in Christ (Rom 5). Therefore, all the believers both clients and counselors in our context, as we counsel our clients, in perseverance, faithfully obeying and serving God in Christ and can live in this broken world with no condemnation (Rom 8:1).

Communicating to Connect

Thursday, September 17, 2026 @ 2:47 PM

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Trained in Gottman Couples Therapy, Level 2, EFT, EMDR Level 2 and Imago. For over a decade, I've sat with people in the hardest conversations of their lives- and watched the same thing again and again: two people who love each other, having the same argument for the hundredth time. Not because they don't care, but because no one every taught them what to do when it's their turn to listen.
After thousands of hours in the therapy room, I put my tools on paper in a workbook- the diagrams, scripts and the repairs. Every conversation is an invitation. Founder, Blessed Life Counseling. www.blessedlifecounseling.com

In the Rock, Not Hanging On for Dear Life

Monday, September 14, 2026 @ 12:01 PM

There is a difference between trusting God and feeling like you have to hang on for dear life.

Sometimes we can approach faith like everything depends on us. We tell ourselves to pray more, trust more, believe more, and somehow keep everything from falling apart.

It can feel like we are hanging from the edge of a cliff, gripping the Rock with everything we have left and praying, “God, please don’t let me fall.”

But what if that is not the picture God has for us? What if we were never meant to spend our lives hanging onto the Rock? What if we were meant to live in the Rock?

Scripture describes God as our rock, our refuge, our fortress, and our stronghold. Those are not just things we reach for when life gets hard. They describe a place of safety.

God is not simply someone we call on in an emergency. He is where we are meant to live.

When Anxiety Makes Us Grip Tighter

Anxiety has a way of telling us that if we loosen our grip, everything will fall apart.

So we hold tighter. We hold onto our plans. We replay conversations. We think through every possible outcome. We try to figure out what everyone else is going to do. We try to control things that were never really ours to control in the first place.

As a counselor, I see this often. When life feels uncertain, we naturally try to create certainty.

We think if we plan enough, worry enough, prepare enough, or stay on guard enough, maybe we can keep something bad from happening.

But that kind of control gets exhausting.

And sometimes we carry that same thinking into our relationship with God.

We start wondering if we are praying enough. Trusting enough. Doing enough. Being strong enough.

Before long, faith can start to feel like one more thing we have to get right.

The Rock Does Not Depend on Your Grip

This is the part I think we need to remember.

The Rock does not become less steady because we are tired. God does not become less faithful because we are anxious. He does not become less present because we do not know what to do next.

Our feelings can change. Our circumstances can change. People can disappoint us. Plans can fall apart.

But God has not moved.

That is why He is the Rock. He is steady even when we are not.

From Survival Mode to Trust

Survival mode says:

I have to keep everything together.

Trust says:

I can do what God is asking me to do and leave the rest with Him.

That does not mean we ignore problems. It does not mean we stop being responsible. It means we stop trying to carry things that belong to God.

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to solve tomorrow that we miss what God is asking us to do today.

The next step may be much simpler than our anxious mind wants it to be.

Pray. Wait. Set a boundary. Have the conversation. Make the decision. Or sometimes, do nothing until God gives more clarity.

We are responsible for obedience. God is responsible for the outcome.

Faith Does Not Mean Pretending

Living in the Rock does not mean Christians never feel anxious, afraid, disappointed, or overwhelmed.

Faith is not pretending everything is fine.

Sometimes trusting God starts with simply being honest with Him about what we are afraid of.

“God, I am scared.”

“I do not understand.”

“I do not know what is going to happen.”

“I am tired of trying to control this.”

“I need You.”

Those are prayers too.

God does not need us to pretend we are stronger than we are. He already knows where we are struggling.

Put Down What Was Never Yours to Carry

Some of the heaviest things we carry were never ours to begin with.

We try to control someone else’s choices. We try to guarantee the future. We try to prevent every disappointment. We try to make sure everything turns out the way we think it should.

But there comes a point when we have to ask ourselves:

Is this really mine to carry?

There is freedom in learning the difference between our responsibility and God’s.

We are responsible for the next faithful step. God already sees the whole road.

We are responsible for loving people well. We are not responsible for controlling how they respond.

We are responsible for obedience. God is responsible for the outcome.

Learning to Live in the Rock

Trust usually does not happen all at once.

Sometimes it looks like one small choice at a time.

One prayer instead of another hour of overthinking. One decision not to replay the conversation again. One boundary. One surrendered fear. One moment of reminding ourselves, “I do not have to figure this all out right now.”

And little by little, we begin to realize something.

We are not hanging over the edge trying to hold onto God. We are already held by Him.

We are not trying to keep the Rock in place. The Rock is keeping us steady.

Our security does not come from how strong our grip is. It comes from how strong He is.

In the Rock

Maybe today God is not asking you to try harder.

Maybe He is asking you to trust Him with what you cannot control. To stop gripping so tightly. To stop trying to solve every outcome. To do what He has asked you to do and leave the rest with Him.

You are not hanging onto the Rock for dear life.

You are learning to live in the Rock.

And that changes everything.

“He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”
Psalm 62:2

A Moment for Reflection

Where are you trying to control something because you are afraid of what might happen if you let go?

What are you carrying today that really belongs in God’s hands?

What is the next faithful step He is asking you to take?

Maybe your prayer today is simply:

Lord, help me stop living as if everything depends on me. Teach me to trust You, obey You, and rest in the safety of who You are.

Ushering Our Clients into the New Wineskin

Thursday, September 3, 2026 @ 11:16 AM

We are bursting at the seams, ready to break out of the old wineskin and being made ready to pour out. The anticipation is rising and His spirit will reform...

I believe our clients are sensing this transition. They are recognizing the hiding places that have kept them from being seen that they no longer identify with but are learning their bearings without them. It is scary and unfamiliar for them. There is anxiety trying to get them to hold on. We are ushering them into the promise land and encouraging them not to retreat. They have been called into their field for this time to be a light. The old wineskin will be shed soon.
